Step by step
- Install the Configurador FNMT: go to https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/descargas/descarga-software and install it on your machine.
- Request the certificate: on https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica -> “Obtener Certificado software”. Fill in NIF/NIE, first surname and email. You'll get a code by email.
- Prove your identity:
- With Cl@ve (quick if you have nivel avanzado). Do it from the FNMT site.
- In person: book cita AEAT at https://sede.agenciatributaria.gob.es/Sede/cita-previa.html and choose the management acreditación de identidad para certificado FNMT. Bring your document and the code.
- Download the certificate: go back to “Obtener Certificado software” and open Descargar certificado. Do it from the same computer and user you used to request it. You'll need the code and to create a backup password.
- Export a backup: from the browser / system store, export with a password to a .p12/.pfx. Keep two copies (USB + encrypted cloud). Then import it on other devices or the phone.
Tricks that save you time
- Book AEAT at dawn and refresh the page: they sometimes release last-minute slots.
- Firefox or Chrome with Configurador: Safari on macOS causes issues. Turn off blockers and overprotective antivirus while downloading.
- Exact spelling of your first surname: exactly as on the document. A wrong accent = error.
- Download immediately after accrediting: while everything is fresh and on the same device.
- Renew before it expires: if you have a few weeks left, renew on the FNMT site and avoid going to the office.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing computer between request and download: it won't work. Repeat the request if you already did it on another machine.
- Not installing the Configurador FNMT: the download button does nothing or gives a weird error.
- Using Safari: it usually fails. Switch to Chrome/Edge or Firefox.
- Not exporting a backup: you format or change PC and goodbye certificate. Then you have to revoke and start over.
- Trying to renew with an expired certificate: the site won't let you. Renew before expiry or re-accredit.
- Going to the office without an appointment: many do not serve without cita. Check AEAT availability or find another registration office.
Typical validity: 4 years. If you lose it or suspect misuse, revoke here: https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/revocar and get a new one.
- 1.Entras en https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica y eliges “Obtener Certificado software”. Instalas el “Configurador FNMT” desde https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/descargas/descarga-software.
- 2.Desde esa misma página, haces la Solicitud: metes NIF/NIE, primer apellido y tu email. Te llega al correo un Código de Solicitud. No cambies de ordenador ni de usuario tras este paso.
- 3.Acreditas tu identidad: o bien con Cl@ve (si tienes Cl@ve Permanente nivel avanzado) desde la propia sede de FNMT, o bien presencialmente en una oficina de registro (AEAT, ayuntamientos).
- 4.Si vas presencial: pides cita en AEAT en https://sede.agenciatributaria.gob.es/Sede/cita-previa.html y seleccionas la gestión de “Acreditación identidad certificado FNMT”. Lleva tu DNI/NIE y el código de solicitud.
- 5.Tras acreditar, vuelves a https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/obtener-certificado-software y entras en “Descargar Certificado”. Lo haces desde el mismo equipo y usuario donde hiciste la solicitud, metes el código y creas la clave de respaldo.
- 6.Nada más descargar, exportas una copia de seguridad con clave (archivo .p12/.pfx) desde tu navegador/almacén del sistema y guárdala en sitio seguro. Luego podrás importarla en otros equipos o en el móvil.
- DNI (españoles) o NIE + TIE/pasaporte en vigor (extranjeros) para la acreditación presencial
- Código de solicitud que te llega por correo tras pedirlo en la sede FNMT
- Ordenador (Windows o macOS) con navegador compatible e instalado el Configurador FNMT
- Correo electrónico operativo (no uses el del trabajo con filtros raros)
- Cl@ve Permanente nivel avanzado si eliges acreditarte online (alta con registro presencial previa)
- Cita previa en una oficina de registro si vas en persona (AEAT suele ser lo más fácil)
Same device for request and download
If you make the request on one computer and try to download on another, it will fail. Use the same device and OS user; otherwise repeat the request.
AEAT appointments run out fast
Appointments to accredit identity fly off, especially Mondays and month-ends. Check early in the morning or try nearby offices.
Validity and renewal
Dura 4 años. Renew online before it expires from the FNMT site; if it expires you'll have to prove your identity again.
Browsers and the Configurador
Safari usually gives trouble. Use Chrome/Edge or Firefox with the Configurador FNMT installed. Disable odd blockers during the download.
Backup is mandatory (unless you like problems)
If you format or change device without exporting the .p12/.pfx, you lose it. Make a passworded backup and store it safely.

Can I request the certificate from my phone?
The request and download are designed for PC/Mac with the Configurador FNMT. You can export it and import it on the phone afterwards, but requesting directly from a phone usually fails.
Do I have to pay anything?
The individual certificate is free. If you opt for ID by video call with an external provider, that may cost. In-person at AEAT is free.
I have a NIE, can I get it?
Yes. Bring your NIE and your valid document (TIE or passport) for accreditation. In the online request use your NIE and your first surname exactly as on your documents.
Can I renew it if it's already expired?
No. Online renewal requires the certificate to be valid. If it expired, repeat the full process with a new accreditation.
I've lost the certificate, how do I revoke it?
From the FNMT site you can revoke it at https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/revocar. Better revoke it before someone uses it and then get a new one.
Does accreditation at the office take long?
With an appointment it's 5-10 minutes at the counter. Then you go home and download it immediately with your code.
