What you need at hand
- DNI (Spanish) or NIE + TIE (foreign) valid.
- Número de soporte of the document (they'll ask this for the letter/videollamada).
- Mobile that receives SMS and an email address.
- If you go by letter, make sure your tax address (domicilio fiscal) is up to date.
- If you do it online with certificate/DNIe, have it installed and working (and the DNIe PIN if you use a reader).

- Mobile phone number and email address.
- If you request a letter: correct domicilio fiscal; sometimes they ask for IBAN in your name to verify.
Step by step
- With certificate/DNIe (fastest): go to https://clave.gob.es → Registro con certificado/DNIe → identify yourself → confirm mobile and email → immediate registration.
- By videollamada: on https://clave.gob.es look for Registro por videollamada, book a slot. On the day, connect with your mobile, show the DNI/TIE and follow the steps. When they validate you, they activate you on the spot.
- In office: book a cita previa at AEAT: https://sede.agenciatributaria.gob.es/Sede/cita-previa.html (reason: Registro Cl@ve). Go with the original DNI/TIE. You leave with Cl@ve working.
- By letter: on https://clave.gob.es choose Registro sin certificado (carta de invitación) and request the letter. They'll send a code to your domicilio fiscal. When you have it, return to the site, enter the code and the número de soporte, confirm mobile and email, and you're done.
- Using Cl@ve PIN: install the app Cl@ve PIN or use the SMS. When a procedure asks for Cl@ve PIN, request a PIN in the app or via SMS. That PIN expires in minutes; use it immediately.
Time‑saving tricks
- If you have a certificate, use it and skip the waits. It's instant.
- Check your domicilio fiscal before asking for the letter. If it's wrong, the letter won't arrive.
- Many official sites behave better in Chrome. If something doesn't load, try a private window and clear cookies.
- Have the número de soporte ready for videollamada/letter. It's the usual little detail that wastes time.
- If your mobile is foreign, enable the app Cl@ve PIN: it works without relying on SMS.
Common mistakes that will mess up your process
- Typing the número de soporte wrong (mixing O with 0, I with 1). Result: error and temporary block.
- Requesting the letter with an old domicilio fiscal. The letter doesn't arrive and you lose about 2 weeks.
- Going to an office without a cita. Many won't serve you without one and you'll go home.
- Assuming Cl@ve PIN = Permanente. Later the procedure asks for Permanente and you're stuck.
- Using someone else's mobile or one with no coverage. SMS don't arrive and you can't validate. Update your number as soon as you change it.
- 1.Opción rápida: entras en https://clave.gob.es y eliges Registro con certificado/DNIe. Te identificas con tu certificado digital o DNIe, confirmas móvil y correo, y quedas dado de alta al momento.
- 2.Por videollamada: desde https://clave.gob.es buscas Registro por videollamada, pides cita, y el día que te toque te conectas con el móvil, DNI/TIE en mano. Te verifican la cara y el documento en 5–10 minutos y te activan en el acto.
- 3.En oficina: pides cita en AEAT (https://sede.agenciatributaria.gob.es/Sede/cita-previa.html) para ‘Registro Cl@ve’. Vas con tu DNI/TIE original, te registran allí mismo y sales con Cl@ve operativa.
- 4.Por carta: en https://clave.gob.es eliges Registro sin certificado (carta de invitación). Metes tus datos (y a veces IBAN para verificar), y te envían una carta con un código al domicilio fiscal.
- 5.Cuando te llegue la carta, vuelves a https://clave.gob.es, entras en ‘Alta con carta de invitación’, metes el código y el número de soporte de tu DNI/TIE, confirmas móvil y correo. Alta completada.
- 6.Instala la app Cl@ve PIN (busca ‘Cl@ve PIN’ de la Administración) o usa el SMS. Desde ahora, cuando un trámite te pida Cl@ve PIN, generas un PIN de 3 letras + 3 números que caduca en minutos y te identificas.
- DNI en vigor (si eres español) o NIE + TIE en vigor (si eres extranjero)
- Número de soporte del DNI/TIE (el código impreso en la tarjeta; te lo piden en carta/videollamada)
- Teléfono móvil operativo donde recibirás SMS (mejor español; con número extranjero a veces falla)
- Correo electrónico que uses (te mandan avisos de alta y cambios)
- Si vas a oficina: cita previa y documento físico original
- Si pides carta de invitación: domicilio fiscal actualizado (si no, la carta se pierde) y, en algunos casos, IBAN a tu nombre para contraste
The letter goes to your domicilio fiscal
If you request the letter and your domicilio fiscal in AEAT is out of date, it won't arrive and you'll eat the delay. Update it first or use office/videollamada.
Número de soporte: the classic pain
The system asks for it in the letter/videollamada. It's on the physical DNI/TIE. If you type it wrong (mix 0 and O, or 8 and B) it will block the registration.
Foreign mobile and SMS
Cl@ve sends SMS. With phones outside Spain they sometimes don't arrive or are delayed. If you can, use a Spanish number or enable the app Cl@ve PIN.
Cl@ve PIN is not Cl@ve Permanente
You register in Cl@ve (common system). Cl@ve PIN is one‑time; Cl@ve Permanente is a stable password. Many procedures accept PIN, but some demand Permanente.
Can I sign up to Cl@ve without a certificate?
Yes. Either by videollamada, in an office (AEAT is often easiest), or requesting a carta de invitación. With certificate/DNIe it's immediate; without it you wait for the appointment or the letter.
How long does the Cl@ve invitation letter take?
Typical: 5–15 days depending on Correos and your province. If it doesn't arrive, it's usually because your domicilio fiscal is out of date. In that case, better office or videollamada.
Are Cl@ve PIN and Cl@ve Permanente the same?
No. Cl@ve PIN is a code that expires in minutes and you generate every time. Cl@ve Permanente is username+password with SMS reinforcement. It's the same system, but different login methods.
Where is the número de soporte on the DNI/TIE?
On the electronic DNI it's the row of 8 characters on the back (‘IDESP’). On the TIE it's near the front labelled ‘Soporte nº’. Don't mix 0 with O or 1 with I.
I changed my mobile, do I need to register again?
No, but you must update the number at https://clave.gob.es or at an office. If you keep the old number, you won't get SMS or be able to use the app.
Can I be fined for not having Cl@ve?
No. But without Cl@ve or a certificate you'll hit a wall in many online procedures. There's no penalty for not having it; only blocked processes until you register.

El tiempo estimado para Cl@ve PIN es 1–4 semanas. Puede variar según la carga del organismo FNMT / Cl@ve y la complejidad del expediente.
¿Qué sistema de identificación necesito para Cl@ve PIN?
Para Cl@ve PIN el usuario requiere Cl@ve (PIN o permanente). Si no dispones del medio exigido, valora alternativas presenciales o apoderamiento.
¿Cl@ve PIN necesita cita previa?
Sí, Cl@ve PIN normalmente requiere cita previa en FNMT / Cl@ve. Reserva con antelación porque la disponibilidad suele ser limitada.
¿Qué diferencia hay entre Cl@ve y certificado digital para Cl@ve PIN?
Cl@ve es un sistema de claves concertadas (PIN o permanente). El certificado digital es un archivo criptográfico instalado en tu equipo o tarjeta. Para Cl@ve PIN, ambos ofrecen identificación electrónica reconocida.
¿Cl@ve PIN se puede hacer con DNIe?
Sí, Cl@ve PIN suele aceptar el DNIe como medio de identificación electrónica siempre que dispongas de lector y los certificados del chip estén activos.
¿Cuánto dura el certificado emitido tras Cl@ve PIN?
Los certificados digitales obtenidos en procedimientos relacionados con Cl@ve PIN suelen tener una vigencia de entre 2 y 4 años, según el emisor (FNMT, ACCV, etc.).
