What you need to have ready
- DNI or NIE in force. If you have an NIE, also bring the TIE or certificado de registro UE.
- A computer where you can install the Configurador FNMT and AutoFirma.
- An email you check (that’s where the Código de Solicitud arrives).
- If you use DNIe: a compatible reader and the PIN del DNIe active.
- If you go to an office: cita previa if they ask for it and the Código de Solicitud printed or noted down.

- Código de Solicitud FNMT (you get this by email when you request the certificate).

Step by step
- Go to the FNMT: Obtener certificado software (https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/obtener-certificado-software). Install the Configurador FNMT, fill the form and generate the request. They'll send you a Código de Solicitud.
- Choose how to prove your identity:
- With DNIe: issue it at home from https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/obtener-certificado-con-dnie.
- At an oficina de registro: find one here https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/oficinas-de-registro and book cita previa if required. Take your DNI/NIE and your Código.
- After proving your identity, go back to the same computer and browser used for the request. Go to "Descargar certificado", enter DNI/NIE and the Código, and download it. Then export a copy .p12/.pfx with the private key and a password.
- Register in Cl@ve with your certificate at https://clave.gob.es/clave_Home/registro.html and activate Cl@ve Permanente/Cl@ve Firma to sign where it's accepted.
- Install AutoFirma from https://firmaelectronica.gob.es/Home/Descargas.html. On Mac, allow the app in Security and privacy if it gets blocked.
- Test the signature on VALIDe: https://valide.redsara.es/valide/ to avoid surprises on the day you submit.
Tricks that save time
- If you go to an office, check AEAT first: they often have earlier appointments.
- Use Firefox or Chrome. Safari messes with Configurador and AutoFirma.
- Temporarily disable your antivirus if it blocks key generation (then turn it back on).
- Store the .p12 copy in a password manager or on a secure USB. It will save you when you change devices.
- If you're short on time, DNIe is the fastest if you already have the PIN and a reader.
Common mistakes that will ruin the process
- Changing computer or browser between request and download. Result: “keys not found”.
- Leaving it to the last minute: the código/solicitud caduca. If it expires, start again.
- Going to the office without an appointment or with only a photocopy of your ID. They'll send you home.
- Confusing Cl@ve PIN (access) with Cl@ve Firma (signing). They're not the same.
- On Mac, not giving permissions to AutoFirma. Signing fails and you waste time.
- Not exporting the copy with the private key. The PC dies and goodbye certificate.
- 1.Go to the FNMT: https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/obtener-certificado-software and click “Solicitar certificado”. Install the Configurador FNMT, fill your details and generate the request. You’ll get the Código de Solicitud by email.
- 2.If you have a reader and DNIe PIN, issue it at home from “Con DNIe”: https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/obtener-certificado-con-dnie. If not, prove your identity at an Oficina de Registro (AEAT, Seguridad Social, ayuntamientos). Find offices here: https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/oficinas-de-registro.
- 3.After proving your identity, return to the same computer and browser you used for the request. On the same FNMT page go to “Descargar certificado”, enter your DNI/NIE and the Código de Solicitud, and install it. Then export a copy .p12/.pfx with the private key and a password.
- 4.Register in Cl@ve with your certificate (alta avanzada) at https://clave.gob.es/clave_Home/registro.html. Activate Cl@ve Permanente if you want to use Cl@ve Firma for signing on sites that accept it.
- 5.Install AutoFirma from https://firmaelectronica.gob.es/Home/Descargas.html to sign PDFs and forms. On Mac, authorise the app in System Preferences > Security & Privacy if it blocks.
- 6.Test your signature here: https://valide.redsara.es/valide/ (certificate and signature validation). Better to fail the test than fail when submitting to the AEAT.
- Valid DNI or NIE (original, physical — no phone photos)
- For NIE: TIE or certificado de registro de ciudadano de la UE
- An active email address (you'll receive the Código de Solicitud from the FNMT)
- The computer and browser you'll use for the request and download, with the Configurador FNMT installed
- If you go to an oficina de registro: an appointment (cita previa) if required and the Código de Solicitud
- If you use DNIe: DNIe activated with its PIN and a compatible reader
Same computer and browser, or guaranteed error
The download must be done on the same computer and browser where you generated the request. If you change or reinstall before downloading, you'll have to start over.
The code and request expire
The FNMT will expire the request if you don't prove your identity or download in time. If it expires, you start again. If you're unsure of the exact deadline, don't leave it to the last minute.
Offices with mandatory cita previa
Many AEAT/Seguridad Social offices require cita previa. Without an appointment they'll send you home. Check the specific requirements of your local office first.
Cl@ve PIN is not the same as Cl@ve Firma
To sign documents you need Cl@ve Firma or a certificate. Cl@ve PIN lets you log in, but it doesn't always allow signing.
Backup copy or drama
Export your certificate with the private key (.p12/.pfx) and store it with a password. If you lose it or your device dies, without a backup you'll have to revoke and issue a new one.
FNMT video‑ident exists, but usually paid
If you don't want to go to an office or use DNIe, FNMT offers videoidentificación. It's convenient, but it costs and timing depends on demand.
¿Qué necesito para completar Firma Electrónica sin que me lo rechacen?
Firma Electrónica es gratuito en FNMT / Cl@ve y se puede presentar por cuenta propia. El punto que interrumpe el trámite es que hace falta Cl@ve activa, y si no está dada de alta el registro previo puede tardar días. Además, el formulario tiene 5 pasos y la sesión de la sede caduca antes de terminar si se interrumpe. Can I get the certificate without going to an office?
Yes, if you have an active DNIe with a reader you can issue it at home. FNMT also offers videoidentificación (paid). If not, you'll need to go to an oficina de registro.
How long does it really take?
With DNIe you can have it in an hour. With an office it depends on the appointment: some people do it in 2–3 days, others wait weeks. The download is immediate after accreditation.
Is it valid for Hacienda, DGT, SEPE and Seguridad Social?
Yes. Certificado FNMT and Cl@ve Firma work on most sites: AEAT, DGT, SEPE, INSS, TGSS, ayuntamientos… Some older sites only accept AutoFirma.
How long does the certificate last?
Usually 4 years. Before it expires, renew from the FNMT if the browser and the certificate itself still work.
Can I use it on multiple computers and on mobile?
Yes. Export the .p12/.pfx with the private key and password and import it on other devices. Android handles it well; iOS is fussier but it can be imported.
I've lost the certificate or think it's been stolen, what do I do?
Revoke it immediately here: https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/renovar-revocar and issue a new one. Don't wait.
Is Safari OK? And Linux?
Better use Chrome or Firefox with the Configurador FNMT. Safari causes trouble. On Linux it works, but install Configurador and AutoFirma properly.

¿Qué diferencia hay entre Cl@ve y certificado digital para Firma Electrónica?
Cl@ve es un sistema de claves concertadas (PIN o permanente). El certificado digital es un archivo criptográfico instalado en tu equipo o tarjeta. Para Firma Electrónica, ambos ofrecen identificación electrónica reconocida.
¿Firma Electrónica se puede hacer con DNIe?
Sí, Firma Electrónica suele aceptar el DNIe como medio de identificación electrónica siempre que dispongas de lector y los certificados del chip estén activos.
¿Cuánto dura el certificado emitido tras Firma Electrónica?
Los certificados digitales obtenidos en procedimientos relacionados con Firma Electrónica suelen tener una vigencia de entre 2 y 4 años, según el emisor (FNMT, ACCV, etc.).
