Renew your FNMT certificate (persona física) online

What you need

1. Certificado FNMT vigente installed in your browser. If it's already expired, you can't renew here.
2. Computer (Windows or macOS) with Firefox or Chrome/Edge. Mobile doesn't work and Safari often causes problems.
3. Configurador FNMT installed so the site can generate/import keys without errors.
4. Email address that works (they sometimes send a request code).
5. Installation permissions on the machine and a quiet 5 minutes so you don't mess it up.

Documentation

• DNI/NIE (the number must match the old certificate).
• Certificado FNMT de persona física still valid (the one you're renewing).
• Email to receive instructions/code if required.
• Compatible machine and browser + Configurador FNMT.

Step by step

1. Install the Configurador FNMT: go to https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/descargas/descargar-software and put it on your machine. Without this the renewal usually fails.
2. Open a compatible browser (Firefox or Chrome/Edge) and check your certificate appears in the browser store.
3. Access the renewal: go to https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/renovar and click “Renovar certificado”.
4. Identify with your current certificate when the browser asks. If you have several, pick the right one (check the NIF and date).
5. Fill in the details (NIF/NIE, email) and accept terms. If you get a request code by email, keep it as you may need it to download.
6. Download and install the new certificate on the same machine and browser where you made the request. If you change machine, you'll hit the classic "no request exists" error.
7. Make a backup: export the certificate to .p12/.pfx with a password and store it somewhere safe. Then import it into other browsers if you need.

Expert tips

• Renew within the 60 days before expiry. Not before, not after.
• Close other browser sessions before downloading to avoid plugin locks.
• Use a strong password for the .p12/.pfx backup and store it off the machine (USB in a drawer). It saves you worries.
• If you get an error, clear cache or try Firefox (it usually behaves better) and always have the Configurador FNMT up to date.

Common mistakes

1. Trying to renew with an expired certificate: not possible, you need a new issuance.
2. Requesting from one machine and downloading from another: "no existe petición" error. Everything must be on the same machine/browser.
3. Using Safari or mobile: it doesn't work. Use Firefox or Chrome/Edge on desktop.
4. Forgetting the backup: you lose the certificate and can't sign. Export it now.
5. Not having the Configurador installed: the site won't generate or install properly and you'll waste time. Install it before starting.
